I am looking for a used car to become my new DD. I have found two Mazda 6 S wagons for sale with really high mileage. One is 2005 with 151,000 miles from a private seller the other is a 2004 with 120,000 miles from a Mazda dealer. I was thinking I could get an extended warranty from the dealer and maybe not have to worry. Has anyone had experiences with this generation Mazda 6?

120k miles isnt even that much

I dont know if they rust like the others mazdas but otherwise try for a warranty and you should be fine

I have the 04 Mazda 6 S Wagon and have been driving it since new. It has about 90K miles on it. It has held up pretty well, most years being trouble free, however this year has been expensive. Some things that have gone wrong for me are:

Failed ignition coils needed to be replaced (common on Mazdas)

Fan control module went bad so fan was staying on for long time. I had it replaced and it is okay now

Wife drove through some giant pothole and radiator mounts sheared off and broke the cooling fan. Had this fixed at dealer and it was around $1K

Car was always smelling like burning oil. I had the oil pan gasket replaced and it went away.

There are some recalls going on now with airbag inflators (free fix).

Passenger window doesn’t go down all the way (not fixed yet). My son broke this.

Headliner is starting to sag (not fixed yet)

Throw in a new set of tires and I have spent way more money on this than my Porsche 911 this year.

On the positive side, there aren’t many wagons to be had out there anymore. This generation Mazda 6 has more horsepower than the current generation which is 10+ years newer. The interior has held up well. Watch out for rust if car was ever in the snow. Mine has zero rust but has always been in Texas.

I love my ‘05 Sepang Green 6 wagon. The only thing I don’t like is the failing lcd readout in the center console. I don’t know what time it is in the car now. Mine only has a bit over 70k on it now though. Would trade it in for the new 6 wagon if they sold it in the states.

Watch out for ignition coils (if not replaced they tend to burn out manifold converters), front control arm balljoints (squeak squeak) rear quarter rust and sticky tailgate handles.

Other than that they’re great but beware that some of the wagon-specific parts can be hard to come by.
